The Full Story

Wittnauer has a rich history in the watch world as a U.S. importer of Longines, but we personally love the watches they produced in the mid-20th century. This “Skin Diver” reference 4000 is a perfect example of how Wittnauer understood the importance of durability and aesthetics. The reference 4000 featured a rugged stainless-steel case with thick, faceted lugs to allow for easy wear, and to hold up in rigorous activities (such as diving). The case used to be waterproof with a screw-down caseback, though we don’t advise you go swimming with it today. Furthermore, the rich black dial and enlarged tritium indexes, numerals, and hands make it easy to read. If you’re looking for a casual sports watch without the flash, this is it.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This watch is in good condition with light scratches from wear and some concentrated scratches on the outside of the lugs. The matte black dial is in good condition and has a very nice patina. The tritium indexes and handset have also turned to a nice color of crème brûlée, however it appears that the handset may have been re-lumed a long time ago.
